Report on the Results:  It was the first time we decided to take part in World Space Week. The students of our school were encouraged to think up possible events and activities to celebrate this annual public event. The initiative to organize and conduct the celebrations took over a school UNESCO club “Avante” which has the most active students as its members. They received a lot of different ideas and suggestions and developed a programme and a plan of activities within World Space Week. Once it was agreed with the teachers, the preparations began. We decided to celebrate not only World Space Week itself but also the International Year of Astronomy. We displayed the official poster of World Space Week as well as posters and wall newspapers made by our students. Since this year’s theme was “Space for Education”, we tried to use space in the classroom in the most efficient way. First of all, we organized a space-related books exhibit at the school library to excite student’s interest in learning about space. It was attended by a lot of people of different ages. Since IT and computer graphics are getting more popular these days, we organized Starlit sky on the computer screen workshops for the 5th formers (20 students) teaching the basics of “Adobe Photoshop”. The students were so passionate about the process of drawing the sky that they did not even want to leave the class. We also conducted a lot of different optional lessons and quizzes for the students of 8th and 5th forms on the history of space exploration and the modern problems of space. Space theme was used at physics lessons where students presented their scientific projects and research works. We tried to make those events not only educational but also interesting and entertaining. So we used exciting slide-presentations containing colourful pictures and extracts from scientific and educational films about space. As for the primary school students, they were also involved into World Space Week. We organized an art works exhibit and a drawing contest which allowed them to use their imagination in drawing space. We had huge amounts of children’s drawings (170 art works) and every visitor to our school was amazed by the exhibition. There were also school trips to the planetarium (95 students of three grades), which was a great opportunity to discover space in an exciting environment. Thus, World Space Week had influenced almost every student in our school. All events and activities within World Space Week were widely reported at the school website. We look forward to the next year’s celebration.
